Bibles Without Everlasting Punishment – As Compared with the King James Version

March 27, 2009

The King James Version of Matthew 25:46 reads:

And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

This translation, sadly, misleads readers to embrace a religious dogma – everlasting punishment. This is, however, an unscriptural view.

There are a number of English translations that have been more accurate and honest in attempting to translate the truth of this Greek passage. Here are some Bible translations that are not influenced by religious tradition when it comes to the accuracy of Matthew 25:46.

1798 A Translation of the New Testament Nathaniel Scarlett

And these will go away into aeonian punishment: but the righteous into aeonian life.

1863 The Literal Translation of the Holy Bible Robert Young

And these shall go away to punishment ageduring, but the righteous to life age-during.

1864 The Emphatic Diaglott Benjamin Wilson

And these shall go forth to the aionian cuttingoff; but the righteous to aionian life.

1884 The New Covenant J.W. Hanson

And these shall go away into aeonian chastisement, and the just into aeonian life.

1893 Emphasized Bible Joseph B. Rotherham

And these shall go away into age-abiding correction, but the righteous into age-abiding life.

1899 The Twentieth Century New Testament Fleming H. Revell

And these last will go away into aeonian punishment, but the righteous into aeonian life.

1903 New Testament in Modern Speech Richard Francis Weymouth

And these shall go away into the Punishment of the Ages, but the righteous into the Life of he Ages.

1913 The Holy Bible in Modern English Ferrar Fenton

And these He will dismiss into a long correction, but the well-doers to an enduring life.

1926 Concordant Literal New Testament A.E. Knoch

And these shall be coming away into chastening eonian, yet the just into life eonian.

1938 The New Testament, a Translation Edgar Lewis Clementson

And these shall go away into eonian correction, but the righteous into eonian life.

1958 New Testament of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Anointed James L. Tomanek

And these shall go away into agelasting cutting-off and the just into agelasting life.

All Men

And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me (John 12:32).

… Even so by the righteousness of One the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life (Romans 5:18).

Who will have all men to be saved … (I Timothy 2:4-6).

Every Man

That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world (John 1:9).

For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. But every man in his own order … (I Corinthians 15:22-23).

All Families

… In thee shall all families of the earth be blessed (Genesis 12:2-3).

All Flesh

All flesh shall see the salvation of God (Luke 3:5-6).

All the Kindreds

All the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee (Psalm 22:27).

All Nations

… The LORD’S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it (Isaiah 2:2).

The World

… Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world (John 1:29).

This is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world (John 4:42).

To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the Word of reconciliation (II Corinthians 5:14, 19).

The Whole World

And He is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world (I John 2:2).

Every Creature

Who is the Image of the invisible God, the Firstborn of every creature (Colossians 1:15).

And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, ‘Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever’ (Revelation 5:13).

All Things

Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things(Acts 3:21).

For of Him, and through Him, and to Him, are all things(Romans 11:36).

And when all things shall be subdued unto Him, then shall the Son also Himself be subject unto Him that put all things under Him, that God may be All in all (I Corinthians 15:21-28).

That in the dispensation of the fullness of times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in Him (Ephesians 1:10).

And, having made peace through the blood of His cross, by Him to reconcile all things unto Himself; by Him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven (Colossians 1:20).

All In All

And when all things shall be subdued unto Him, then shall the Son also Himself be subject unto Him that put all things under Him, that God may be All in all (I Corinthians 15:21-28).
